Living at Drayton Mills: A Spartanburg Neighborhood Guide
Most apartment neighborhood guides list the nearest grocery store and stop there. Drayton is a different kind of place, so this is a different kind of guide. The mill opened in 1902, a village grew up around it, and the campus was restored rather than rebuilt beginning in 2014. Living here means living inside that history, with the rest of Spartanburg a few minutes down the road.

Start with the trail
The Daniel Morgan Trail System, which everyone in Spartanburg calls The Dan, runs right through the Drayton Mills campus. Residents step out the door and onto a paved multi-use trail that is busy with runners, strollers and dogs from early morning on. Our campus paths, which log more than 30,000 walks and runs a year, feed straight into it. The nearly one-acre gated dog park is on the way.
Then walk downstairs
The Drayton Mills Marketplace sits on the campus itself, so a lot of daily life does not need a car. You can get dinner at Dray Bar & Grill, a Detroit-style pie and custard at Pi-Squared Pizza, a workout at Burn Boot Camp, primary care at Palmetto Proactive Healthcare, and an adjustment at Sparkle City Chiropractic. There is also a salon at The Lauren Ashtyn Collection, vintage finds and maker classes at Reinvintage Warehouse, and a financial advisor at Edward Jones. 1800 Drayton Catering & Events hosts weddings and corporate events in the restored event space, so there is often something happening on the plaza on a Saturday. Downtown is minutes away
Drayton Road takes you into downtown Spartanburg in a few minutes by car. Morgan Square, the Chapman Cultural Center, Hub City Bookshop and the city’s restaurant scene are all an easy drive. Wofford College and Converse University are close by, and I-85 and I-585 are within easy reach for commuters headed toward Greenville, Greer or Charlotte.
What residents tell us they love
The same things come up again and again in reviews: the exposed brick and original hardwood floors, the friendliness of the on-site team, and the grounds. That means the 60-foot lap pool under the twin water towers, the pond, and the fireplace patio. What residents wish they had known sooner is that no two lofts are alike. There are 68 floor plans, so tour more than one.
